The Moth House will be displaying a selection of its books as well as works from the series I wance met Jesus in a coille, by Edgar Martins at ARCO Madrid 2023 @ Galeria Filomena Soares (stand 7B02). The fair takes place from 22-26.02.2023.
Grandma (2018), by Elena Helfrecht, is from her ongoing series“Plexus”, a photographic study of still lives that emerge from inherited trauma and post-memory, following the death of the artist’s grandmother. Through this series the artist reconnects the fragmentary history of her female lineage and confronts a past spanning across four generations, examining ideas around post-memory, mental health, war, and history.
This dypthic was produced in the context of Edgar Martins’ Siloquies and Soliloquies on Death, Life and Other Interludes, a project developed over a period of three years with the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, Portugal. It reflects on the gaps in understanding, information and representation and the deep rooted anxieties around ethics and aesthetics that inevitably arise when documentary photography and questions of visibility intersect.
This artwork was produced in the context of Carlos Barradas’ Ferry Tales series. This ongoing series of work explores the departure, journey and arrival of a myriad of ferry crossings, and the ship as heterotopia par excellence.
Torso, by William Lakin, is from the 2021 series Five Minutes After Birth, a response to the social conditioning men experience in modern Western societies. Referencing anti-social behaviour, sexuality and traditional gender roles, this work offers both a critical and reflective response to men’s pursuit of power and control, and their inclination to engage in competitive and often harmful behaviours.
